Not feeling well? Feeling blah and wishing you had something more to say about your day than a mumbled ‘fine’ when someone asks how you’re doing? The answer may be simpler than you think.
Our attitudes truly do matter. When we aren’t happy with our lives or how the day is going, everything seems to go wrong. The issue is that life isn’t a steady thing. You could have a really good day followed by a really bad day. With so many factors beyond your control, ranging from the weather to politics, it may appear impossible to ever truly feel good about anything.
The solution is in your thinking. You will notice that being able to think positively changes your entire outlook.
How do you cultivate the habit of thinking positively?
The obvious solution is to use more positive language. Instead of saying something negative aloud or in your head, try to think of a better way to say it. Work, for example, may not be grueling, but it may present interesting challenges. While this may appear artificial and forced at first, the more you work to reframe the situation, the easier it will be to find a more positive spin.
How many times have you mentioned “having” to do something? This in and of itself has a negative connotation, as if you’re being forced to do something you don’t want to do. Instead, try replacing the word ‘have’ with ‘get’ in this context. You are not required to give a presentation by Friday. You get to choose one. Do you notice a difference? This is how you turn a task into a chance.
Disasters will undoubtedly occur. Not everything you try will turn out exactly the way you want it to. Rather than focusing on the disaster, try shifting your attention elsewhere. It might be time to try a new method or set a new goal.
It’s difficult to stay positive when you’re exhausted and feel like you’re in over your head. Sometimes the best way to cultivate better self-talk is to give yourself a break. Things will look better when you return refreshed.
Being positive should never imply turning a blind eye to tragedy or injustice. In the world, bad things will happen. Someone with a positive attitude, on the other hand, will be able to look beyond the tragedy to the next step. Where others see problems, positivity sees solutions. This is the beginning of activism and change.
